Bob McCone will continue his work with the Johns Hopkins basketball program, entering his 19th season on the Blue Jay bench.
McCone's specialty is with the Blue Jay defense, a group that has consistently been ranked among the best in the country. Under McCone's direction, Hopkins finished No. 2 in the nation in scoring defense in 1998 and 1999, and the 2000 and 2001 squads ranked third and sixth in field goal percentage defense, respectively. In 2001-02 the Blue Jays finished sixth in the country by holding their opponents to 37.9 percent from the field. The 2003-04 season saw the Blue Jay defense hold opponents to only 68.1 points per game. In 2006-07, as Hopkins advanced to the second round of the NCAAs, the Blue Jays held opponents to just 63.2 points per game on 39.8 shooting from the floor.
McCone was formerly a highly successful head coach at Aberdeen High School, with 10 league titles in as many seasons.
A 1971 graduate of Millersville University, McCone received his master's degree from Loyola College in 1975. He currently serves as a guidance counselor at Fallston High School. McCone and his wife, Fran, live in Havre de Grace. They have three children: Brett, a Hopkins graduate, Sean, and Carrie.
