EVANSTON, IL - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 5-4 last weekend at the Northwestern Duals to improve its record to 19-8. Eight Blue Jays posted double-digit wins, led by freshman Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) with 19 wins.

On Saturday, Hopkins lost to #3 Notre Dame 23-4 and dropped a close one to #10 Stanford, 14-13. JHU then rebounded with wins over Lawrence (19-8) and Cal Tech (24-3). On Sunday, Hopkins went 3-2 with wins over Detroit Mercy (19-8), Wayne State (20-7) and Cleveland State (20-7). The Blue Jays lost to UC San Diego (15-12) and #2 Ohio State (18-9).

Wieder led the Sabre team to a 45-36 record on the weekend by winning 19 of his 27 bouts. He is now 56-22 on the season, the most wins on the team. Senior Aaron Fernandes (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) posted a 16-10 record and is now 43-22 overall.

The Foil team went 47-34 on the weekend, led by juniors Ben Dorfman and David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) and sophomore Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees). Dorfman won 16 of 26 bouts to improve to 47-18 on the season. Ferguson went 14-10 and is now 41-21, while Nunley won 13 bouts and is now 23-21.

Freshman Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)), junior Dan Zielinski (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) and freshman Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) all posted double-digit win totals to lead the Epee team to a 48-33 record. Krywopusk went 16-7 on the weekend and is now 41-18. Zielinski was 13-8 and is now 22-13. Ronan won 11 bouts to improve to 31-24 overall.

Hopkins returns to action on February 8 at the Duke Invitational. JHU will take on #9 Brandeis, Duke, MIT and North Carolina.
