Hopkins' Bouloubasis, Walsh Claim UAA Fencing Individual Weapons Titles FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sunday, February 25, 2001 Contact: Carlton White, Assistant SID, 410/516-0638 HOPKINS' BOULOUBASIS, WALSH CLAIM UAA FENCING INDIVIDUAL WEAPONS TITLES Four Blue Jays named to all-Association team. BALTIMORE Two Johns Hopkins University fencers captured individual weapons championships on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the 2001 University Athletic Association men's and women's fencing championships hosted by Johns Hopkins University. Freshman Matt Bouloubasis (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) won the men's epee individual competition, and junior Sarah Walsh (Fitchburg, MA/St. Bernard's) earned the women's sabre title. Bouloubasis and Walsh lead a list of four Hopkins fencers that garnered all-Association honors for finishing in the top three in a particular weapon. Blue Jays' graduate student Kevin Little (Estes Park, CO/Estes Park) tied for third-place in men's foil, while sophomore Joy Wu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) finished third in women's epee. Bouloubasis was also named the men's Rookie of the Year.Other standout JHU finishes included freshman Georgiana Lee (Bakersfield, CA/Stockdale), who placed sixth in women's epee, and freshman Matt Barnes (Dunn Loring, VA/George C. Marshall) and sophomore Allison Barker (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), who each finished sixth in men's and women's sabre, respectively. Brandeis and NYU also picked up two individual weapons champions. The Judges' had two freshman lock up individual titles and co-Rookie of the Year accolades as Alexander Hochster (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) and Jessica Lewis-Turner (Haverford, PA/Baldwin) won the women's foil and women's epee divisions, respectively. NYU's Michael Pasinkoff (So., Bayside, NY/Towsend Harris), who finished second in men's foil at the 2000 UAA Championships, won this year's individual title. His sophomore teammate Justin Hansen (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) placed first in the men's sabre division. On the men's side, NYU placed eight fencers total into the final six individual standings. Brandeis posted four, while Hopkins and Case Western each had three. For the women, Brandies and NYU tied with six fencers among the top-six finishers. JHU had four and Case Western nabbed the final two spots. In team competition held on Saturday, NYU captured its 12th-straight UAA men's fencing championship followed by second-place Johns Hopkins. Brandeis was third and Case Western finished fourth. Brandeis' women's squad won its team competition, edging NYU, which was second. Case Western and Johns Hopkins round out the top four.
