A familiar face around the Centennial Conference, Bob Chesney is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Blue Jays and his second as the team's defensive coordinator. Chesney coached the defensive backs and special teams in his first two years at Hopkins and continues to coach the defensive backs as defensive coordinator.
The Blue Jay defense showed steady improvement in Chesney's first season as defensive coordinator as the Blue Jays held their final five opponents to an average of just 15.4 points and 286 yards per game. In addition, four of the team's eight All-Centennial selections came from the defensive side of the ball, including both starting cornerbacks who played directly under Chesney's guide.
Chesney wasted little time making an impact at Homewood as two of his three defensive backs earned All-Centennial honors in 2005. Cornerback Adam Colicchio paced the team in interceptions for the second straight year and garnered First Team All-Centennial honors, while safety Jim Sanders earned Second Team All-Centennial and Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors.
In 2006, Chesney guided a secondary that steadily improved as the season unfolded. Both cornerbacks earned All-Centennial honors as Chris Chauvin was named to the first team, while Dan Requena earned honorable mention status.
Chesney came to Hopkins after spending two years as an assistant coach at King's College (PA), where he coached the secondary and special teams. He helped the Monarchs to the 2003 ECAC South Atlantic Championship game, which they lost to Johns Hopkins. He coached a pair of safeties who earned First Team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors during his two-year stint at King's.
Prior to his time at King's, Chesney spent one year as the defensive coordinator at Delaware Valley College and two years as an assistant at Norwich. At Delaware Valley he had oversight of all defensive game-planning after getting his start in college coaching at Norwich.
Chesney graduated from Dickinson College, where he was a four-year letter-winner for the Red Devil football team. Chesney was a two-time All-Centennial selection at Dickinson and served as a team captain as a senior in 1999. He helped lead the Red Devils to the 1998 ECAC Southwest Championship with a 35-28 win over Wesley (DE) in the title game. He was named team MVP as a sophomore.
Chesney has been active in various volunteer organizations, including Big Brother Big Sister and the Special Olympics. He was also a contestant on the reality television Show "Cowboy U" in 2006 The 12-week show aired on CMT with Chesney finishing as the runner-up in the show.
