SYRACUSE, NY -- Senior midfielder Eric Wedin (Levittown, NY/Levittown Division) scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to help No. 9-ranked Johns Hopkins (2-1) to an 11-10 victory against top-ranked Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the defending national-champion Orangemen, who were beaten last on April 11, 2000 by head coach Dave Pietramala’s Cornell University squad. In its last 20 games, Syracuse has only lost twice, including today’s setback. Both losses have been to teams directed by head coach Dave Pietramala.

Now in his first season as head coach at Johns Hopkins, Pietramala got an incredible performance out of Wedin and his defensive unit, which limited the talented Syracuse attack to only 10 goals on 54 shot attempts. Sophomore goalie Rob Scherr (Resisterstown, MD/McDonogh) made 15 saves for the Blue Jays.

Syracuse (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 start with goals by sophomore attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and sophomore midfielder Pat Hogan (St. Louis, MO/DeSmet Jesuit). Wedin cut the score to 2-1 with his first goal at the 7:59 mark of the first quarter.

The Orangemen took a 4-1 lead when junior attackman Liam Banks (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) hustled to a rebounded shot in front of the Hopkins crease and put it past Scherr at the 6:44 mark of the second quarter. The Blue Jays responded with two more goals before halftime, one by Wedin and one by sophomore attackman Adam Doneger (Hewlett, NY/Lynbrook) with 40 seconds remaining in the first half which cut SU’s lead to 4-3 at the break.

Both teams tallied three goals in the third quarter and Syracuse still held on toa one-goal lead (7-6) heading into the final period. Freshman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, MD/Boys’ Latin) notched his eighth goal of the season to give the Orangemen an 8-6 advantage at the 13:31 mark of the fourth quarter, but Hopkins rattled off five-straight goals, including three by Wedin, which gave the visiting Blue Jays an 11-8 lead with 2:13 remaining in the contest.

Banks scored off a feed from Springer with 2:06 left and freshman attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, NY/Carthage) took a Springer pass and fired it into the goal with 1:52 remaining which cut the JHU lead to 11-10. Both teams battled hard for the loose balls down the stretch and each took a time out during the final 1:38. After Syracuse gained possession of a ground ball at midfield, the Orangemen took a timeout with 31 seconds remaining. SU never got a shot off as the ball was checked free out of junior midfielder Josh Coffman’s (Carthage, NY/Carthage) stick by a Hopkins defenseman.

Springer was Syracuse’s leading scorer with five points (two goals, three assists). Powell finished with two goals and two assists. Fifth-year senior goaltender Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) totalled 12 saves.

The Orangemen host No. 2-ranked Princeton on Saturday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader which features SU’s women’s lacrosse team against Massachusetts at noon in the Carrier Dome.

Johns Hopkins will next be in action against Virginia on March 24 at Homewood Field.
