May 30, 2008

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics Tom Calder announced today the retirement of Matt Smith, head men's soccer coach at the University. Smith, who served in the position for 15 seasons (1993-2007), cited personal reasons.

The Blue Jays had a 240-45-19 (.821) record in Smith's 15 seasons at Johns Hopkins. In that period, the Blue Jays captured seven Centennial Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times. Johns Hopkins finished as the national runner-up in 1994 and advanced to the national quarterfinals in 1998 and 2006.

A national search for Smith's replacement will begin immediately.
