GETTYSBURG, PA - The #14 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team opened its Centennial Conference slate with an 8-1 win at Gettysburg on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Bullets fall to 1-3 overall.

In doubles action, sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and freshman Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) defeated Patrick Dempsey and Kevin Raynes 8-5 at second doubles. Freshman Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) and senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) then won at first doubles, beating Derin Wilson and Mike Leary 8-6. The Bullets picked up their lone point of the match with a 9-7 win at third doubles. Dale Beshore and Will Brinks defeated seniors Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) and Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy).

In singles action, Blythe won in straight sets, beating Dempsey 6-1, 6-1. Vasoontara followed that with a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles over Leary. Maldow clinched the match for the Blue Jays with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Beshore at first singles. Wang then beat Wilson 6-3, 6-4 at second, followed by an 8-4 win at fifth for sophomore Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy). Roberti closed out the match with an 8-3 win over Jon Walter at sixth.
 

 

Hopkins travels to Florida next week for matches against Florida Tech and Flagler. JHU and Florida Tech will square off on Monday, March 17 at 2:30 pm. Hopkins will meet Flagler at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, March 18.
