AUGUSTINE, FL - The #14 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team avenged a last season loss by defeating Flagler 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon in the final match of its spring trip. The Blue Jays even their record at 3-3 while the Saints fall to 6-8 overall.
The Blue Jays won two of the three doubles matches to take control of the match early. Senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and freshman Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) won at first doubles, beating David Cotrone and Harry Snoxell 8-6. The pair, now ranked #1 in the Atlantic South, is 9-4 and has won three straight. At second doubles, sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and freshman Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) defeated Aaron Haines and Kyle Maloof 8-6 to improve to 6-3. The Saints picked up a point at third doubles when Jeremy Lamande and Stephen Coulis defeated senior Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) and sophomore Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) 8-6.
In singles action, Hopkins won five of the six matches to claim the match. Maldow, the #2 ranked player in the Atlantic South, won a three-set match at first singles. He dropped his first set 6-4 to Cotrone, but rebounded to win 6-3 and 6-2 in the second and third sets and take the match. He is now 13-2 on the season. Wang won at second singles, his fourth straight, beating Haines 6-3, 6-4. Vasoontara picked up his third straight win, defeating Lamande 7-6, 6-1 at third. At fourth, Blythe won over Snoxell 6-4, 6-4 and is now 10-5 overall. Roberti dropped just one game in beating Cody Gordon at sixth singles. Maloof won the lone singles match for Flagler, beating Vale 7-6, 6-2 at fifth.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 at McDaniel in Centennial Conference action. The match is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
