Hopkins Men's Tennis Wins Season Opener with 5-2 Victory Over Salisbury State \FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, March 13, 2001 HOPKINS MEN'S TENNIS WINS SEASON OPENER WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER SALISBURY STATE SALISBURY, Md. - Johns Hopkins' men's tennis team defeated Salisbury State 5-2 on the road on March 9. The Blue Jays, who ended the fall campaign with a 2-3 mark, open the spring season with a victory to improve to 3-3 overall. Senior co-captain Jamie Saxe (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) won 7-6(5), 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Kevin Alford (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township) was also taken to a tie-break, winning 6-3, 7-6(5) at #2 singles. Senior Andrew Chu (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) at No. 3 singles needed three sets to hand his opponent a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 defeat. Senior co-captain Dan Kreeger (Miami Beach, FL/Ransom Everglades) also won 6-3, 6-4 in his match at #5. Hopkins earned the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The tandem of Saxe and Alford bested Salisbury State's #1 team of Greg Forster and Nicholas Peel, 9-7. Chu and Kreeger combined for the 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. JHU opens conference play this Wednesday when the team hosts in-state Centennial Conference rival Western Maryland at 3:00 p.m. on the JHU Tennis Courts.
