Blue Jays Open Season at Occoquan Challenge, Chase

LORTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's crew team opened its season at the Occoquan Challenge and then competed at the Occoquan Chase last weekend. Highlighting the Challenge for the Blue Jays was a third place finish in the Varsity Eight. At the Challenge, the Varsity Eight crew finished third with a time of 19:13.6433. Three crews competed in the Women's Double, with the Blue Jays placing fourth, fifth and sixth. At the Chase, the Blue Jays took fifth in the Open Double with a time of 23:27.7433. Juniors Vanessa Damm (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) and Courtney Cunningham (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) rowed in the Double. Hopkins then placed 14th out of 20 crews in the Varsity Eight with a time of 18:03.2590. Sophomore Allison Carlstrom (Middletown, MD/Colonial Forge (VA)), juniors Madison West (New Britain, CT/Hotchkiss), Rebecca Williamson (Burlington, Ontario/Hillfield Strathallan) and Katie Blumer (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area), senior Clare Blubaugh (Hickory, NC/St. Catherine's School (VA)), freshmen Rachel Gross (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) and Pia Heilmann (Coppell, TX/Phillips Academy Andover (MA)), junior Allison Hoy (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) and freshman Beth Simmonds (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) rowed in the Varsity Eight.
Two crews competed in the Varsity Four for the Blue Jays, placing 14th and 17th out of 25. The first Varsity Four crew was comprised of Carlstrom, West, Williamson, Blumer and Simmonds. The second was comprised of sophomores Roseann Martin (Miami, FL/Felix Varela) and Nicole Lake (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), junior Amelia Whitman (Galesville, MD), sophomore Uejin Kim (Houston, TX/Stratford) and junior Jenna Rossoff (Morristown, NJ/Morristown). Next up for Hopkins is the Head of the Schuykill on October 27 in Philadelphia. The following day, October 28, the Blue Jays will compete in the Tapke Chase in Chestertown, MD.
