NEW YORK, NY - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team finished in third place at the 80th annual NIWFA Championships. Temple finished in first overall, followed by Haverford. The Blue Jays were the runners-up in the Foil, fourth in the Epee and eighth in the Sabre.
Medaling in the Foil were junior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) and sophomore Samantha Dolan (S. Pasadena, CA/S. Pasadena) in sixth and seventh respectively. While senior captain Cindy Liu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) was named to the NIWFA All-Academic team.
"The depth of the team is indicated by Sofia DeBenedictis, an alternate, who was a finalist and All Conference selection in The Eastern Women's Fencing Conference championships one week before," said head coach James Murray.
Freshman Corrine Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) picked up nine wins, many by one point, to account for the Blue Jays margin of victory in the Epee rounds.
"Team captain Cindy Liu faced the strongest lineup of opponents," noted coach Murray. "Calling for all the experience and cleverness she has acquired in four seasons as a starting epeeist."
