PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team opened its season at the Temple Open last weekend. The Blue Jays had a good showing, with sophomore Katie Kim (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and freshman Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) posting top-15 finishes.
In the Epee, senior Cindy Liu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) was the top finisher for the Blue Jays, placing 29th out of 84 competitors. Freshman Corinne Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) finished in 37th, with sophomore Ying Guo (Fargo, ND/Fargo South) finishing in 72nd, freshman Molly Schwartz (Potomac, MD) placing 75th and freshman Brooke Katz (Woodbury, NJ) finishing in 78th.
Kim led Hopkins in the Foil with a 12th place finish. Junior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) followed that with a 16th place finish and sophomore Samantha Dolan (S. Pasadena, CA/S. Pasadena) finished in 20th. Freshman Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Chelteham Ladies' College) placed 39th, with freshman Michelle Gulino (Booklyn , NY/Convent of the Sacred Heart) placing 57th.
In the Sabre, Vitale placed 10th lead Hopkins. Freshman Adiya Katseff (Manalapan, NJ) finished in 41st, with freshman Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ) placing 48th and freshman Laura Gelston (New York, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) finishing in 60th. Freshman Rose Foran (Los Angeles, CA) finished in a tie for 73rd.
Hopkins continues its season this weekend at the Haverford Open on Sunday, November 11.
