SID 410/516-0638 WOMEN'S FENCING GOES 5-8 AT NORTHWESTERN DUALS EVANSTON, IL - Johns Hopkins' women's fencing team competed over the weekend at the Northwestern Duals, hosted by Northwestern University, from Friday, January 19, to Sunday, January 21. JHU finished 5-8 at the event.Hopkins was winless after day one, sporting a 0-4 team record. The Blue Jays, which participated in four of the seven rounds on the day, dropped its first match to Fairleigh Dickinson, 14-13. In round two, Temple dominated the Blue Jays, posting a 21-6 win. JHU held its own against Michigan State in round three, but succummed to the Spartans, 16-11. Hopkins moved on to round five and lost 19-8 to Florida. Day two proved to be more eventful for the Blue Jays, who posted a 5-4 mark. Hopkins began the day with a 19-8 loss to Wayne State University in round one, a 21-6 loss to host Northwestern in round two, and an 18-9 defeat at the hands of Michigan in round three. JHU was reeling following its 0-7 record to begin the Duals, but the Blue Jays never gave up, winning their next five rounds to improve their mark to 5-7 overall. Hopkins bested Ohio State 16-11, Hollins University 20-7, University of Chicago 15-12, Lawrence University 22-5, and Cal-State Fullerton 20-7 during the streak. In its final match, JHU fell to North Carolina, 18-9 in round nine. The Blue Jays are home this Saturday, January 27, in a quad meet as they take on James Madison, Drew, and Haverford at the White Athletic Center.
