Hopkins Hosts UAA Fencing Championships FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Saturday, February 24, 2001 Contact: Carlton White, Assistant SID, 410/516-0638 NYU MEN'S FENCING CLAIMS 12TH STRAIGHT UAA TITLE; BRANDEIS WOMEN EARN FIRST TITLE SINCE 1995 Johns Hopkins men place second; Blue Jay women finish fourth. BALTIMORE New York University claimed its 12th straight University Athletic Association men's fencing team championship, while Brandeis University won its fifth overall women's title, and its first since 1995, on Saturday evening at the 2001 University Athletic Association Fencing Championships hosted by Johns Hopkins University.NYU's men's team earned 68 points for its 3-0 mark. The Violets also won the foil, epee, and sabre competitions. JHU placed second in this year's competition after finishing third in 2000. The Blue Jays went 2-1 on the day and collected 38 points to edge third-place Brandeis, which posted 32 points and a 1-2 overall record. Case Western Reserve was fourth with 24 points and a 0-3 mark. On the women's side, Brandeis ran away with the team title, scoring 61 points and registering a 3-0 overall record. Defending women's champion NYU claimed second-place with 50 points and a 2-1 mark. Case Western Reserve's 27 points (1-2) gave the Spartans a narrow win for third-place over Johns Hopkins (0-3), which finished fourth with 24. The Judges edged the Violets, 22-20, in the battle for the team foil title. Brandeis also won the team epee and sabre titles. Competition continues on Sunday at Johns Hopkins with the finals in the individual competitions. Six finalists in each weapon, in both the men's and women's divisions, will compete in a round-robin format to determine their respective individual champion.
