WALSH, WU EACH RECEIVE NCAA WOMEN'S FENCING CONSIDERATIONS

BALTIMORE – Two Johns Hopkins University women's fencers, junior sabre Sarah Walsh (Fitchburg, MA/St. Bernard's) and sophomore epee Joy Wu (Walnut, CA/Walnut), received NCAA nominations after the completion of final round action at the Mid-Atlantic/South Women's Fencing Regional held at Drew University on March 10. Walsh garnered full NCAA consideration while Wu was given an at-large nomination.

Walsh, the UAA and two-time National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association sabre champion, advanced to the third and final round of 12 after posting a 5-6 mark at Regionals. Walsh entered the tournament as the No. 11 seed in sabre competition, and finished seventh overall. Wu advanced to the second round, narrowly missing out on the finals by one bout. She placed 13th overall, but gets the at-large nod with her initial seed of seventh.

Sophomore sabre Allison Barker (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville) entered Regionals as the 13th seed. However, she did not advance out of the first round, going 1-4 in her pool.

Final selections to the NCAA National Championships will be announced on Friday. The national committee will meet via conference call on Thursday, March 15 to confirm the nominations of Walsh and Wu. Until the national committee meets, Walsh and Wu should not be considered JHU selections for the national championships.

The JHU women's team ended the regular season with a 10-20 under first-year head coach Jenny Rolling. The squad, which retained only three fencers from last year's team in Walsh, Wu, and Barker, showed steady improvement throughout this year's campaign, eventually defeating seven teams late in the season that had beaten JHU earlier in the year.
