BALTIMORE -- With the game knotted 6-6 at the half, No. 12 William & Mary
outscored No. 17 Johns Hopkins 5-2 in the second period to escape with an
11-8 victory in women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Homewood
Field. Junior attacker Erin Wellner (Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy)
totaled two goals and one assist for the Blue Jays who fall to 1-2 overall,
while the Tribe, which got four goals from freshman attacker Lauren Work,
remains undefeated with a 3-0 mark.
Senior midfielder Tara Hannaford added three markers, two in the second
half, as the Tribe pulled away with the win. Hannaford opened the contest
with a score at 28:42 to put W&M ahead, 1-0. A flurry of activity ensued
before Hopkins freshman attacker Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St.
Andrew's) scored back-to-back goals to put the Blue Jays ahead by two at
5-3 with 7:11 remaining in the first frame. Work answered at 5:58, but
freshman midfielder Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) gave Hopkins another
two-point lead at 6-4 with a score at 4:34. William & Mary kept fighting,
however, as Work and senior attacker Lindsey Lowman netted two consecutive
goals at 2:40 and 1:33 to tie the contest at 6-6 at halftime.

Work got the Tribe rolling in the second stanza tallying a marker at the
23:10 mark. Freshman midfielder Katie Stevenson (Chestertown, MD/Kent
County) evened things up again at 7-7 at 24:47 off Wellner's assist. Both
teams went through a scoring drought until junior midfielder Meghan
Schneider received a pass from Collette Chaput and found the back of the
net with a goal at 12:42. W&M would tally two more times to stake a 10-7
advantage with 8:25 remaining in the game. Wellner gave Hopkins new life
with her free position marker at 7:30. But, the Tribe's Schneider fed
Hannaford at 5:37 to make it 11-8. JHU was unsuccessful in scoring a goal
in the remaining minutes despite good looks at the basket.
JHU sophomore goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made
several spectacular saves, finishing the game with a career high 12 on the
afternoon. W&M senior goalie Abby Pheiffer was also stellar in the net as
she posted 13 saves. The Blue Jays outshot the Tribe, 33-21, but lost the
draw control battle, 14-7.
