No. 17 Johns Hopkins Cruises Past Lehigh, 18-2, in Women's Lacrosse FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sunday, March 11, 2001 NO. 17 JOHNS HOPKINS CRUISES PAST LEHIGH, 18-2, IN WOMEN'S LACROSSE BALTIMORE -- Junior attacker and tri-captain Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) tallied three goals and an assist, as did junior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent Count) to lead the 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 18-2 victory over visiting Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field. Hopkins junior midfielder Erinn Dennis (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) added three assists and a goal, while freshman attacker Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) continued her scoring tear through the season, notching three goals in today's action. The Blue Jays improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Engineers begin the 2001 campaign with an 0-1 mark. JHU posted a 1-0 lead after Wellner fed Larrimore for a score 0:29 seconds into the contest. Freshman attacker Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney), who finished the game with two scores, tallied her first marker at 26:13 to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 advantage. Hopkins poured it on as junior midfielder Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) along with Wellner, Dennis, Pearce, sophomore attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mt. de Sales Academy), and freshman midfielder Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) unleashed a sequence of goals to stake an 11-0 halftime lead. Junior defender Liz Renaut (Annapolis, MD/Severn (Davidson)) also got in on the action off her assist to Pearce at 9:57 which gave the Blue Jays an 8-0 margin. Hopkins made it 14-0 when sophomore attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) dished to Larrimore for a tally at 25:40 in the second half. Lehigh prevented a shutout after freshman midfielder Ashley Manion (Cabin John, MD/Walt Whitman) found the back of the net with 23:40 remaining on the clock. JHU also received goals from freshman midfielder Katie Stevenson (Chestertown, MD/Kent County), and sophomore attacker Caroline Bellino (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes), who scored with 0:17 seconds remaining in the game. The Blue Jays' defensive unit of senior Lauren Carney (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall), junior Caroline Miller (Alexandria , VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), sophomore Anne Clark (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), and junior tri-captain Shanu Kohli (Radnor, PA/Radnor) limited the Engineers to 14 total shots and just eight in the first half. Hopkins sophomore goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made three saves and allowed one goal in 48 minutes. Senior reserve goalie Kimberly DiConza (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) allowed one goal in 12 minutes. The Engineers' Vanessa Abbott (Fr., Vero Beach, FL/St. Edwards) allowed 18 goals and recorded 10 saves. The 17th-ranked Blue Jays are home again on Wednesday against Mount St. Mary's at 6:00 p.m.
