JHU Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Davidson, 17-6 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, March 19, 2001 NO. 14 JOHNS HOPKINS CRUISES BY DAVIDSON, 17-6 DAVIDSON, N.C. - Johns Hopkins University, ranked 14th in the nation, scored the first three goals of the game and cruised to a 17-6 victory over the host Wildcats of Davidson College in women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium. Davidson (3-4) dropped its second straight contest while the Blue Jays (4-2) earned their third consecutive victory of the 2001 campaign. Junior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) notched four goals and two assists to lead JHU. Junior midfielder Erinn Dennis (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) tallied the first score for Hopkins at the 28:49 mark off a free position shot, while sophomore attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) also scored on a free position just five minutes later. Following freshman midfielder Katie Stevenson's (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) marker at 21:42, Davidson's Stephanie Hunter tallied the first Wildcat score at the 20:40 mark to cut the lead to 3-1. The Blue Jays responded with five unanswered goals to stake an 8-1 lead into the second half. Freshman midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) tallied a marker during the 5-0 spurt, as did sophomore attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mt. de Sales) who scored with 0:01 remaining in the frame. Junior midfielder Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) opened the scoring in the second stanza with a free position goal at 29:28. Leading 10-1, junior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) recorded the first of her two goals of the afternoon to make it 11-2. Davidson cut the margin to 11-4 with back-to-back goals, but Hopkins responded with another 5-0 run for a 16-4 lead as freshman midfielder Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) also found the back of the net. The Wildcats posted two more scores before JHU struck with 53 seconds remaining for the 17-6 final. Hopkins' sophomore goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) registered a career-high 15 saves and allowed only six goals. Davidson's freshman goalie Becca Nussbaum blocked 10 shots and allowed 17 scores. JHU visits Brown on Friday in a contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
