No. 17 Johns Hopkins Falls to No. 5 Duke, 10-5, in Women's Lacrosse FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sunday, March 25, 2001 NO. 17 JOHNS HOPKINS FALLS TO NO. 5 DUKE, 10-5 BALTIMORE - Eight different players scored for fifth-ranked Duke as the Blue Devils defeated No. 17 Johns Hopkins, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse action on Homewood Field. Senior attacker Kate Soulier and junior midfielder Kate Kaiser each scored two goals for the Blue Devils, while Hopkins was led by freshman attacker Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) who also netted two goals and one assist on the afternoon. Hopkins falls to 5-3 overall while Duke improves to 5-2. Soulier opened the scoring with a free position goal at 22:07, giving Duke a 1-0 lead. JHU junior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) knotted the game 17 seconds later for a 1-1 score. The Blue Devils then tallied four straight goals to stake a 5-1 lead with 9:35 left in the half. Hopkins trimmed the advantage to 5-2 at the 5:41 mark when junior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) fed freshman attacker Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney). Duke recorded two more scores before the end the half, including a goal from junior attacker Kelly Dirks with 15 seconds remaining in the period, to give the Blue Devils a 7-2 halftime advantage. Soulier rolled Duke an 8-2 margin off a free position goal at 24:46 to start the second half. Two minutes later, Pearce found junior midfielder Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) open in front of the net, and Peterson connected with a score to make it 8-3. The Blue Devils received two more free position goals in the frame to go up 10-3 with 9:58 remaining. The Blue Jays tried to rally in the final three minutes, as Pearce posted back-to-back breakaway goals. But, tenacious defense on both sides of the ball limited scoring opportunities, as the game ended with a final 10-5 score. Duke, whose three goals in the second half came off free position shots, finished the game with 27 shots, compared to Hopkins' 26. The Blue Devils corralled 10 draw controls, while the Blue Jays notched six. JHU sophomore goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made 12 saves and allowed 10 goals and DU goalie Kristen Foster posted 19 saves while allowing five goals. Johns Hopkins is home again on Saturday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m. when the team takes on Richmond.
