FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The #21 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated Cabrini 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon at Mary Washington. The Blue Jays improve to 16-3 on the season and will take on TCNJ in the second round Saturday.
Hopkins took a quick 3-0 lead in the match by sweeping all three doubles matches after dropping just one game. Sophomore Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and junior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) defeated Dina DiTaranto and Carolyn Wilson 8-1 at first. Sophomore Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) and freshman Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) won 8-0 at second over Nicole Pontious and Stephanie Tighe. And at third, sophomore Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and freshman Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) won 8-0 over Christine Telling and Daniella Rende.
In singles action, Elamir won her 18th consecutive match to push Hopkins lead to 4-0. She defeated Pontious at third without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0. Berlinghof then clinched the match for the Blue Jays, winning 6-1, 6-2 at sixth over Rende.
Hopkins and TCNJ will meet in the second round at 3:00 pm on Saturday at Mary Washington. The winner will take on the winner of the Mary Washington-Methodist match on Sunday in the regional finals.
